Napa Valley

My husband and I recently returned from a quick getaway trip to Napa and Carmel valleys. We bypassed San Francisco and stayed at the new resort hotel, Cavallo Point, nestled at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge. From the airport, we crossed the GGB capturing photos en route, but nothing would prepare us for the views of the bridge and city from Cavallo Point.

The hotel is on the site of historic Fort Baker. They incorporated the original hospital wards for the reception area and the Michelin Star restaurant, Murray's Circle with the fun Farley's bar. It was recently named one of ten new American Landmarks by Travel and Leisure. We stayed in an Officer's Quarter's hotel room with wonderful views across the parade ground. New contemporary suites were built above us. ALL rooms feature fireplaces! The spa is wonderful with an outdoor 'heated' massage pool!

You can hike or bike to the Golden Gate Bridge from there, or to nearby Sausalito, just 10 minuets away, for restaurants, shops, ferries, and kayaking - which we did in Richardson bay. Napa was a short drive north from here after a hike in Muir Woods to see the Redwood trees. Driving up the Silverado Trail lined with vinyards, we were treated to a wonderful night at at Auberge de Soleil! We had time for just two tastings at Artesa and at Frog's Leap, each a very different vineyard than the other, but both are small and intimate. Restaurants abound throughout Napa Valley, and there are too many choices for too few dinners!

Off to Carmel Valley where we stayed at Quail Lodge - a wonderful family destination and golf resort. Here, too, rooms had fireplaces and private terraces, along with an outdoor pool and spa. Carmel by the Sea is just 10min west, along with the famous 17 mile drive and Pebblebeach! What a quick weekend to take it all in! We'll have to go back and see San Francisco next time!
