The Golden Age of Travel

It remains with us with the added luxuries of modern amenities. I just traveled on the River Cloud from Amsterdam to Basel for one glorious week. Sitting in luxury on the deck of this beautiful river yacht and swathed in a cozy blue rug. Watching the vineyards, castles and sixteenth century villages of the Rhine, I drift slowly by. Young, helpful staff at the ready to bring any refreshment required throughout the day were both friendly and courteous. The ship holds 90 passengers in their 45 beautifully appointed cabins. My cabin was twin-bedded with every comfort, including: a closet, TV-video player, mini-bar, and a delightful bathroom with a comfortable shower and golden fixtures. Best of all, there were vases of roses everywhere, and featured throughout the ship is the splendid gleaming inlaid woodwork with brass fittings.

The tours through the German and French villages were both very well guided and interesting. And I have to mention the delicious food! From the breakfasts to the superb dinners, the variety was never boring and each meal itself was a work of art, proportioned to perfection. The servings were just right and never over-indulgent. One always felt completely satisfied and my companions at the table were always saying that the experience far surpassed their expectations. It certainly did surpass mine.
